How to Change Windows 7 Login Welcome Screen.

In today’s tutorial we are going to learn how change or customize windows 7 login welcome screen without any software.  You can use any pictures or wallpaper as a login screen. There are two methods you can use to change login screen. First method is using windows registry and the second is using gpedit.msc.  Following step will show you how to do that.


Method -1 :  Changing Welcome screen using registry

1Open Run by pressing Windows key + R and type  “regedit”

2Now Find following Key in regedit.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\logonUI\Background

3Right click on “OEMBackground” and Select modify. Change the value 0 to 1 as shown image below.

4Next, go to following directory

C:\windows\system32\oobe

5Now create new folder “info” inside oobe.

6Next, Create Folder “Backgrounds” inside info folder.

7Now paste any pictures , wallpapers you want as a login screen in this folder

Please Note:  Must follow rules for Pictures, wallpapers.

  •  Images must not be bigger than 256 KB in size.
  •  Image name must be a “BackgroundDefault”.
  •  Image must be a jpg file.
9Now Logoff or Lock your computer to view effect. You will find windows 7 login welcome screen changed.

Method -2:  Changing Welcome screen using gpedit.msc:


1Type “gpedit.msc” in run command.

2Find below path in gpedit

Computer Configuration  > Administrative Template  > System > Logon

3Right click on “Always use custom logon background “ and click on Edit

4Select “Enable” and apply.

Now follow 5 to 8 steps from Method -1.
